Question Blog 4

My question regards Father and the Awful Grandmother. Why does the Awful Grandmother call Father mijo, and not her other sons? Also, why does Father do everything the Awful Grandmother tells him to do?

  1. I don't feel like there's enough information about the Awful Grandmother's relationships with her other sons to be able to make a good deduction about why she calls Inocencio mijo instead of one of her other sons. She does feel betrayed by her other sons since both left for the United States (although Inocencio did too). Inocencio is her first born (I think) so perhaps she just has a unique bond with him.

  2. I think it is a tradition in Mexico to be very servile towards one's parents. Although this is somewhat true in the Unites States, I think it is more extreme in other countries. Inocencio seems to be a charmer and kind of a suck-up, just as part of his personality.

  3. Yeah, I do think it is more of a tradition or responsibility to serve your parents in Mexico. But then, why is Inocencio the only one that follows what the Awful Grandmother says?

  4. Maybe she only tells Inocencio what to do, and not her other sons. Or maybe over time, she has tried to tell her younger sons what to do, but they just haven't listened, so she gave up giving them advice before the book starts.

  5. I agree with Linnea's first comment. Innocencio is the Awful Grandmother's first born, so they probably do feel a special bond. Also, maybe because he is the first born, he feels a duty to do whatever the Awful Grandmother tells him to do.

  6. Personally, I think that Inocencio is very weak, especially since he always does exactly what his mother asks, even if it requires leaving his son in Mexico for a year. But maybe he isn't actually weak. Maybe he actually agrees with what all his mother tells him to do.

  7. Adding on to this point. He does do everything his mom tells him to do, or at least that's what it seems. He did leave Mexico to live in Chicago, probably against her will. Also, he married Zoila, whom his mother really dislikes. And probably told him not to get married to her.
